16 and 17 May  ATIBOX 2009

(Sta. Perpueta de Mogoda - Spain)

This year's Atibox show was different from the past ones in many ways. Some of the members of the KLNB club have expressed the wish to train their dogs on the weekend prior to the Atibox, so we have organized a training on the training ground of ŠKD Mumlek in Miklavž near Maribor. The training was spiced up by a picnic and a pleasant get together. In my opinion many have benefited from the training unit, getting some  advice or a grip, but foremost, the dogs have gained an experience (meeting the crowd in the ring), which they do not come by in regular shows. Some glimpses of the training:

Making arrangements for the trip to Spain was more time consuming, the travel route measuring about 1600 km in one direction. This time we started our journey on Thursday, early in the morning. On the motorway station Lom we met up with Inge and Nela, as well as Erik and Tadeja. We continued our way in a caravan of three vehicles. I also have to mention that this time Lara came along, and Erik and Tadeja took Sara with them. Other members of our club, who travelled with mobile homes, took up the journey a day ahead of us. It was the first time we took two dogs to the Atibox. Saša and Aljoša, the owners of Horacij Shiwa's Imperium have entrusted us with their Hor. The drive was quite exhausting, lasting exactly 24 hours, taking into account the stops we made approximately every two hours. Along the way we took some time for a walk down the french coastal town Menton. Some impressions:

We arrived to St. Perpueta de Mogoda, a place approximately 20 km out of Barcelona, where the show took place, on Friday around five o'clock in the morning. Then we went to Vallromanes, 16 km away. At about eight o'clock we set up camp on the campsite El Vedado. We, the Slovenes, were the first participants of the Atibox to set up camp there. The French, the Spanish, the Dutch participants, etc., followed. There was almost no time for a rest, since we had to give our dogs a decent walk, pitch our tents, take a shower, prepare lunch and have a drink. Next, I took Sabina to the hotel Sabadel, from where the judges and the presidency took off for a meeting. Luckily, we have bought a navigation system a year before, and it had led us exactly to where we wanted. Time was running fast. In the evening we had a barbecue and something stronger to drink, then we went to bed.

Day one / Saturday

We got up at seven o'clock, walked the dogs, had our morning coffee, breakfast, packed our luggage and went to the scene of the event, where in half an hour's time we built up two pavilions (the male half of the team, Erik and me, were a well-rehearsed team), hung up the club's and the Slovene flags, thus setting up the Slovene camp. Other members of our club, who came with mobile homes, unfortunately had to set up camp some distance away, as a special place was designated for them by the organizer of the show. The first impressions of the site were good, as the rings were big enough and close together and the terrain was excelent as well. On Saturday a baptism of fire was awaiting Montess, Jellow Baby (Čiča) and Horacij from our caravan, as well as Pepe and Bar. It was Horacij's second show. His first one was the dog show CAC in Maribor, where he won the champion title in the class of 12 to 18 months old. Sabina and I kept our fingers crossed for Horacij to get the German judge Brigitte Müller in his class (12-18 months old). Our wish came true.

The drawing of the judges:

yellow males                               - Brigitte Müller – Germany

yellow females                            - Rena Pras – France

brindled males                            - Fabrizio Censi – Italy

brindled females                          - Juan Manuel Rodriguez – Spain

whelps and youngest males          - Oliver Erat – Austria

whelps and youngest females        - Alexander Balashov – Russia

After the judges and the classes were announced, the organizer of the show earned his first negative points, as the announcement was made only in Spanish. All the signs in the rings were just in Spanish as well. None of us knew, and I presume that many of the other foreigners as well, which ring he is going to exhibit in. When we got used to the Spanish expressions, we managed. This Atibox was different from the prior ones regarding the participation. The number of dogs signed up for the show was record breaking. 836 dogs participated in two days. The classes were numerous and accordingly competiton was strong. On this day the Slovenes have exhibited in many different rings at approximately the same time, so unfortunately we could not follow or cheer to all of them. Our Horacij has presented himself in the competition of 38 young yellow males. We got the assessment towards the end. The judge Brigitte Müller has awarded quite a few marks »very good« prior to our assessment. Before Horacij and I have entered the assessment ring, it was our goal in this strong class for Horacij to receive the mark »excellent«. It was also befoere we entered the ring that Horacij made an impression on some breeders, as they wanted to take pictures of him in the exhibit pose. In the ring Horacij presented himself excellent and also got the mark »excellent«. We did not make it onto the short list, however Horacij still has time. I believe that you will hear of him in the future.

HORACIJ  SCHIWA'S  IMPERIUM

We left the exhibit site at about eight o'clock in the evening. After making arrangements with one of the organizer's breeders, we have left the Slovene camp built up on the site. Naturally, we took the dogs, the flags and the rest of our things along and headed to the campsite, where we gave our dogs a decent walk, fed them and sent to bed. Tadeja has made sure that our children had dinner and went to bed. A barbecue and a debate on the impressions of the day, having something strong to drink, followed.

Day two / Sunday

This year the Slovene camp had a visit from the president of the Malesian boxer club, Mr. Zakaria Hidajat. In general, on Sunday it was livelier in our camp. A new drawing of the judges followed, impatiently awaited by Sabina and me. We exhibited Glorija in the class of the working brindled bitches for the first time, in the competition of 30 signed up bitches. Our wish did not come true, concerning the drawing of the judges.

The drawing of the judges:

yellow males                          - Rena Pras – France

yellow females                       - Brigitte Müller – Germany Rena Pras – France

brindled males                        - Fabrizio Censi – Italy

brindled females                     - Juan Manuel Rodriguez – Spain

veteran females                      - Oliver Erat – Austria

veteran males                        - Alexander Balashov – Russia

The judging began, the assessment of the open classes taking place in the first row. The open class of brindled bitches was the most numerous one, having a record breaking 73 bitches signed up. Thus, Glorija still had time. Meanwhile, I exhibited Inge's yellow veteran Karin, who won the first place in the competition of three. In the Slovene camp it was quite cheerful, as in that moment we got a finalist for the best in show. The assessment of Ciklon and Neca took place at the same time. On Ivo's wish I presented Neca in the open brindled class. Then the time came for me to step into the ring with Glorija. In the ring there was a crowd, as the Spanish judge quickly viewed all of the competition. The judge began his assessing according to the numerical order in the catalogue. The temperature of the air was around 30 degrees and therefore only two bithces were in the ring at the same time. Glorija has presented herself beautifully during the assessment, but not without Sabina's help and the sausage?. All of the judges who were judging in the other rings, have finished work already. After our judge has finished his assessing, the selection began. I went to pick up Glorija and bring her into the ring in a running manner. On our way to the ring, we ran past the Italian judge Cenzi, who already finished judging and was leaving the area of the rings. In that moment Cenzi turned around for a 180 degrees, carrying all the papers, and could not take his eyes off of Glorija. In the ring all of the competiton gathered again. The posing of the bitches followed and a run of all of them who made it into the competition. The ring was really big, nevertheless in the run it was so crowded that Glorija and me got stuck in a »sandwich«. A new posing followed and the judge began placing us from one end of the ring to the other, and back again. Not even God knew if we were still in the game or not. Then the leader of the ring began to hand out the assessment papers to those who did not make it. Luckily, I did not get mine yet, so I knew that we have made it onto the still numerous short list sshort of 15 bitches. We posed our dogs again, as well as ran. In the first round we did not show what Glorija is capable of, so I lowered the speed, thus making way ahead of me. In the second and the third circle, Glorija ran as she was supposed to. However, I had the feeling that the judge did not look at Glorija during the run. While the dogs were running, the judge pulled some of them out and placed them into the middle of the ring. Again I did not know whether we were still in the game. He thanked the exhibitors who stood in the middle of the ring for their participation. Only a handful of us remained in the competition for the best in show. Again we posed our dogs, the judge was chosing and placing the bitches into the middle of the ring. As the fourth one, he pulled me into the middle. We were the chosen ones for the best in show. While we were leaving the ring, the judge stepped up to me and talked enthusiastically about something in Spanish, looking at Glorija at the same time. Sabina and all the members of our club, who accompanied the tense action and cheered for Glorija, were thrilled that she has made it into the best in show.

Sabina and me were hoping to get a placement in the best in show, but would not dare to speak of it. Some of the members of our club were convinced our wish would come true.

After a short break the final stage of Atibox took place – best in show in which Karin, Inge's veteran, presented Slovenia in the competition of all winners of the veteran classes. Here the Austrian judge Erat chose a brindled male as the champion of the veteran class. Once again the Slovenes distinguished themselves by excellent cheering. Towards the end I entered the best in sho with Glorija. A posing and a run followed. The cheering of our members was superb. When I ran, I heard »Glorija, Glorija, ...«. After having run two rounds, the judge decided. He places us into the third place. Out of the crowd that surrounded us when pictures were taken, Cenzi came up behind me and asked me if Glorija has won the last year's Atibox and congradulated me at the same time.

When it was all over, I was able to merge all the impressions, what we have achieved, but foremost I came to the conclusion that this success is a reassurance of last year's victory. Having made into the first three for two years in a row is a huge success and the proof that Glorija has a place in the very peak of the world class of brindled bitches. On the other hand, I still wonder what might have been if the Italian judge Cenzi were appointed to our class by the drawing.

After a successful and tiresome Sunday, on Monday we left the campsite El Vedado and headed to Barcelona, where our children were treated with lunch in McDonalds, visited the FC Barcelona store and finally, visited the La aquarium.

Late in the afternoon we took up the journey bound home. Along the way we stopped in the french Perpignan, where Ivo and Ljuba got stuck due to a defect on their mobile home. Tired we arrived home on Tuesday around six o'clock p.m., having closed the chapter of Atibox 2009.
